I have to admit Russia was never a place that even remotely interested me. In fact I was slightly scared of Russians.....even thought I didn't, and still don't know any! You see that's the problem with watching too much TV and subliminally ingesting the crap that is called TV. In my mind Russian women are nice to look at (in a hard sort of way) but the mail order Russian bride always springs to mind, and Russian men are all in the army and want to drop bonds on me and my menfolk. Can't governments just drop bombs on each other and leave the rest of us out of it? Now , I've never claimed to be a totally rational human being but I was rational enough to know that I had a SERIOUS problem with my outlook on a WHOLE nation. Come to think of it was it really my problem or does Russia need to sort it's PR out? Ok, fair enough, I'm going to own this one, it really was MY PROBLEM! which is why I decided to stop being such an ar*se hole (it's an 's' missing by the way), and decided to start embracing all things Russian. Duplet Crochet Magazine has lovely crochet patterns modeled on beautiful women who I can assure you (loosely) are not sporting price tags. I still don't know any Russian men so I can't assure you, loosely or otherwise of anything, but I'm sure Ivan Drago only had it in for Rocky, I'm guessing the rest of us are safe. I'll get on to Russian crochet eventually but for now, seeing as I like the (free) image of the lady making the Russian doll I've used as my home page picture, my first venture in to Russia and it's craft industry is to discover more about Russian dolls, a.k.a Matryoshka, a.k.a Babushka, aka stacking dolls. I have to say watching the video has given me a new appreciation of Russia and her heritage, even if the original idea originally came from China, but what's an idea unless you're going to run with it? The video has also introduced me to the lathe. Why did I not know about this truly amazing piece of machinery? Come to think of it, it's probably because I'm a girl and the menfolk decided to keep it well and truly to themselves. They gave us the washing machine, how much more rotary movement did we need in our lives, I'm sure they pondered.
