I learnt how to knit the Kitchener stitch using knitting needles before I learnt the more common method of sewing off your stitches using a tapestry or wool needle. Kitchener Stitch is once method you can use to 'graft' two pieces of knitting together. It makes an invisible join if you get the sequence and tension right. I assumed that knitting the stitch, rather than sewing it, would save time but having now tried both methods, I personally find sewing it a lot quicker. The only advantage to knitting the Kitchener Stitch is that you can still get on and graft your pieces together if you don't have a tapestry or wool needle on hand. If I had to choose ten knitting techniques which I find invaluable, Kitchener Stitch would be pretty high up there. The video below is the clearest explanation on how to do the Kitchener stitch I've found to date.
