![]() I want to make up a sample of these gloves as I think this will be the perfect pattern to teach my beginner hand knitting students how to: Rib Knit In The Round Work Straight on Circular Knitting Needles The original pattern calls for the use of Double Pointed Needles; personally I'm not a fan of them so I'm going to rewrite the original pattern so that the group can practice the magic loop method. Having said that, I may also make a pair using DPNs. I'm not sure If I dislike DPNs because I haven't had much practice with them and the awkwardness will eventually go away, or if I just think they're a waste of time as a circular knitting needle will do the job just as well without all the flaffing about. I'll have to see. I love the fact that this pattern calls for 48 stitches to be cast on. 24, 48 and any other multiple of 24 is a magic number for me, as the cards you use to create patterns on a punchcard knitting machine are always 24 stitches wide which means it will be very easy for me to add some patterns to the gloves if I want to. This is a vintage pattern so a few substitutions have to be made. The original pattern can be found here at Free Vintage Knitting Patterns The pattern doesn't give the tension which is fine for a pair of ribbed gloves as they'll stretch. It does say worsted weigh yarn is needed which is Double Knitting (DK) in the UK and 3oz of yarn is approx. 100g. I have a lovely 80% acrylic/ 20% wool blend yarn which will be perfect for this project, the acrylic will make the gloves easy to wash, the wool will make them soft and warm. No needle size is specified but from my own experience I'll be using 3.25mm knitting needles, I knit very loosely when using the continetal method of knitting where the yarn is held in the left hand so I use smaller needles to tighten up my tension. My Amended Pattern Materials: 100g of DK Yarn 4 Dpns or a circular knitting needle Cast on 48 stitches Work in the round in 2x2 ribbing (2 stitches knit, 2 stitches purl) for as long as you want the cuff to be. Turn Next row: K 3, work in ribbing across next 44 sts, k 1. Turn. Following row: K 1, work in ribbing across next 46 sts, k 1. Turn. Repeat the last 2 rows 5 more times or as many times as you need to make the thumb opening. Join and continue working around in ribbing as before until the gloves are as long as you want them to be. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
