I came across this picture when I was scouting around looking for an image to add to my About Me page. I was looking for a picture that depicted a caring hands-on Auntie, but this one looks more like Stepford Psycho Mommie and soon to rebel crazy kid. Nonetheless I really like this image. In fact I like it so much I've decided I'm going to knit it and turn the knitted panel into a cushion; but before I even look at my needles, I'm going to have to convert the image in to an intarsia chart. There's are a number of software programs online that will convert images. I'm using Stitch Fiddle but you'll find others by doing a quick internet search. This image shouldn't be too hard to convert, it's bold and doesn't have too many colours - it should be a cinch (famous last words in the world of knitting!) Roll on more time than I care to mention! This is my first attempt at generating the image as a chart. It's not that great is it? I'm pretty sure there must be a way to change the colour of the background so that Mommy Dearests' hair doesn't blend in to the background. I also want the two tone look of their dresses to shine through. Back to fiddling with the sofware me thinks! If I don't manage to achieve what I'm after, I'll try a few of the other programs online to see if I get a better result. I may even have a go at drawing the chart myself! Super quick attempt number two. I'm in my public library and my time on the computer is running out. As you can see I managed to change the colour of the back ground. I will need to print out the picture or have the two pages open side by side to get the right shape for mommies hair and tidy up the sides. At this point I'm just glad it can be done and it was very easy to do. The picture below is actually attempt number 3, the second chart showed up the two tones in both the mother's and daughters' dresses but I changed the number of colour used and it disappeared. Nevertheless I know it can be done which is all I need to know at this stage. Once I have the final draft it will be time to print out the chart. I haven't used my printer in a while so tomorrow morning I'll attempt to print it from home. If not I'll pop down to my local internet cafe and print from there. Once I have the chart in hand I'm now going to have to look out for a yarn range that has all the colours that I'll need - hopefully that won't be too hard. I'd love to knit it in wool but I'll have to see how the budget is looking. Watch this space!
